Why we do this? While Chris and Isabella Brand were traveling in Cozumel, Mexico with their family, they were shocked by the number of local families that only use motorcycles for transportation. But what's even more breath taking is the number of kids that don’t wear helmets. Most families in Cozumel ride motorcycles as their only source of transportation. It is common to see infants and young children riding without helmets because they are impossible to find on the island. Guarda Cocos, Inc. is a non-profit we formed so that every infant and young child in Cozumel may own a helmet to keep him safe.

How big of an issue is this?
75 percent of people in third world countries cannot afford a car. Motorcycles are often the preferred mode of transportation. Helmets in third world countries are difficult to find, especially small ones for children. Any person who does not wear a helmet is at increased risk for head injury. Children account for more than half of the injuries and deaths sustained in cycle related injuries. The injuries seen in the Emergency Rooms ranged from superficial scrapes, abrasions and lacerations to traumatic brain injuries. Wearing a properly fitted helmet every time you are on a bicycle or motor bicycle is the most important prevention method (cdc.gov)
